David Copperfield's stage magic revealed - 3 tricks

here are 3 video clips revealing David Copperfield's stage magic tricks. Explanations are in Russian but the visual is enough to reveal to you how it was done. Enjoy!

Trick 1

Trick 2

Trick 3

Follow up: Daniel Chesterfield's easy to do magic

Back in July, I posted an interesting video on how to learn some COOL magic super duper fast. Here's a few more from the same magician. Check them out!

And before you know it, some are following in his footsteps.

Cup Levitation

This cool levitation magic trick looks like you are levitating a paper cup. Check out the amazing video demonstration..

Effect: The magician announces that they are going to make an empty cup float. They release their grip on the cup and it appears to float in mid air.

Method: Take an empty large paper or styrofoam cup. Carefully make a hole in one side of the empty cup, big enough for your thumb to stick through. If the empty cup is made of styrofoam, you could even push your thumb straight through it.

Hold the empty cup with both your hands and facing the others in your party, announce that you are going to try and make the cup float in mid air. Have one thumb pushed through the nearest side of the cup to you, out of view of your audience. Then, appear to be concentrating your mind on the cup and gradually open up both hands at the same time. While doing this, push your hands slightly forward as if you are following the floating cup and eventually grab the cup with both hands. Now, discreetly slip your thumb out from the side of the cup.

This is a simple illusion but it looks great when done at the right angle. Practice in front of a mirror to make sure that you get the angles and the timing right.

Magicians view. The thumb is sticking through this side of the cup. Spectators view. The thumb through the cup is not visible at this side.

1)Magicians view with thumb through cup. 2) Spectators view, thumb not visible.

Anti Gravity Magic Ketchup Trick

Amazing but incredibly easy trick, where you command a ketchup sachet to rise and fall, inside a bottle at your command with a simple hand motion. Very visual and amusing levitating trick. SCROLL DOWN PAGE TO VIEW VIDEO DEMO AND SECRET.

Ketchup sachet is seen to float at the top of the bottle.
Sachet is floating at top of water filled bottle.
A gentle downwards motion, signals the sachet to sink to the bottom.
A downward hand motion, commands the ketchup to sink to the bottom.
" name="ketchup-3.jpg" height="150" width="150">
Up and down hand motions can stop the ketchup at will. Looks amazing.

Method:

1) Take the label of the bottle so as to make the contents clearly visible.

2) Fill the bottle, near to the top with cold tap water.

3) Insert the sachet into the bottle, it should float at the top of the bottle.

4) Holding the base of the bottle, as if to steady it, apply gentle squeezing pressure to the base. The increase in pressure inside the bottle should cause the sachet to float slowly downwards. Releasing the grip on the bottle will allow the sachet to float upwards.

5) To make the sachet stop in the middle of the bottle, you need to apply just the right amount of pressure, this can be found with practice.

The beauty of this trick is the audience are completely unaware of the technique as their attention is drawn to the motions of your other hand, beckoning the sachet to rise and fall. Add an interesting line of patter and you have a great impromtu levitation trick that is easy to set up and can be used in a wide variety of places or as a pub trick.

David Blaine And The Balducci Levitation

Effect: The magician raises his arms up by his sides and slowly appears to rise a few inches off the ground for a little while before returning to earth quickly.

Balducci Method: The Balducci method involves positioning your audience about 8 to 10 feet away at a 45 degree angle .You need to keep your audience small so they are within this field of sight.

This is a very restrictive angle trick and it is essential that the angles are practiced, preferably with a friend or in front of a mirror.

The Balducci levitation involves pretending to float off the ground by going on to your tip toes on just one foot ( the one furthest from their view ) while the nearest foot is raised a little off the ground.

This looks fantastic as the foot on your tip toe is hidden by your trousers, the nearest foot and the angle they are watching at. You only rise a few inches off the ground but the impression is fantastic. This trick is all in the presentation with you appearing to rise slowly, wait for a second or two and then return to the ground quickly so as the audience do not have time to figure the trick out.

The picture here shows the beginning on the left and the climax of the trick on the right .

Image of Balducci levitation. Street magic levitation has been practiced by David Blaine and Criss Angel

David Blaine Version : David Blaine used various camera shots in his TV special with the audience reaction being filmed close up and linked to other clips of him in mid air with some of the angles showing the Balducci levitation .

The view that shows him rise a good few inches in the air and does not show the audience, would possibly have been done with a bar attached to a pivot like a seesaw.

The end of the pivot could have had a hook which clipped onto a harness attached to his belt and a member of the crew would have pushed down on the other side of the bar lifting David up in the air. The camera angle would have hidden the props.

This film would have been mixed in with the audience clips in the studios later.

Hot Shot - Blaine Style Card Jump Technique

A card is made to jump out from the deck into your other waiting hand and jump back. This card sleight is awesome, when mastered.

You Will Need :

A deck of playing cards.
A nice bit of patter.

How To Do the Trick :

This card sleight can be used as a trick on its own or used to boost the visual impact of another trick. Just ensure that the card that you wish to "jump" is at the top of the pack ( use your favourite card force to ensure this).

card deck is shuffled at beginning of card jump sleight routine.

The deck is shuffled while being held, bottom long side of the deck, resting against the fleshy part of the thumb. ie biddle grip.

Spectator chooses card, card is forced to top of the deck.

The spectator is asked to choose a card and return it to the pack. ( This card should be forced to the top of the pack, using your favourite force. )

Deck is held pointing towards spectator. Thumb on oneside, first finger at top of deck.

Hold the deck as seen in the photo. The deck should be held lengthwise between you and the spectator, thumb supporting one lengthwise side and your middle, ring and small finger supporting the other lengthwise side. Your first finger should be touching the short side of the deck, nearest the spectator.

Apply pressure to both sides of pack by squeezing gently. First finger is slipped under top card.

Create some misdirection by bringing your free hand over the deck and appear to be squaring it up. Use this cover to slide your first finger under the top card. At the same time, apply pressure to both long sides of the top card by using your middle finger to push the card against the base of your thumb, causing the card to arch like a bridge

Top card should be pushed forward and deck tilted downwards to hide finger.

The top card should be pushed slightly further forwards towards the spectator so as to cover more of your first finger. The deck should also be tilted slightly downwards to hide the fact that your forefinger is under the card.

Top card should be pushed forward and deck tilted downwards to hide finger.

Straighten your first finger quickly. This will release the sprung top card which should jump into the air into your awaiting other hand.

First finger should be flicked , causing top card to jump into the air.

The card can be made to jump back to join the deck in your other hand by repeating the spring move with one card ( much easier) . Press long sides of card with thumb and middle finger. Curl first finger underneath card and straighten first finger when you wish the card to jump

Magnetic Fingers Trick

This trick appears to be like hypnotism - Is your patter good enough to convince them ?

Ask your friend if you could try a little "instant hypnosis" on them. Assure them that it's safe and nothing harmful can or will happen.

Next, ask your friend to fold their hands together, weaving the fingers and clasping them tightly. After a few moments of doing this, tell them to raise their two index (first) fingers so they are sticking up and they should be about an inch apart ("church and steeple" kind of thing).

Now, slowly move your hands over their hands (don't touch their hands) and say, "Your fingers will touch. Try to fight it, but they will still touch!"

Slowly, but inevitably, your friends fingers will start to move together. Tell them to concentrate on their fingers (just ham it up, okay?) and soon their fingers will touch.

This is self-working, but it should still be practiced! It's a great bar trick, to. Have fun!

Ask spectator to put their hands together and link fingers. Point fingers upwards and they will be drawn magnetically together.

1) Spectator closes hands together. 2) Spectators fingers are irresistibly drawn together

Money Making Magic Trick

Effect: Here is an excellent routine where some pieces of plain paper are magically transformed into dollar bills right in front of your eyes. With a little easy preparation, you can soon be performing this amazing trick,

The video below, first shows you the trick being performed, then reveals the clever secret. Look, listen, learn and most of all, enjoy watching this magic trick.

David Blaine's Arm Twist 360 Degrees Revealed

Here is a Free Street Magic Trick for you! On an episode of David Blaine's TV show, David Blane tries to get a spectator to rotate his arm (while copying David) 360 degrees. The spectator cannot rotate his arm like David as David turns it 360 degrees right in front of his eyes. Though this illusion was made famous by David Blaine, it originated with the magician Shinkoh and has been around for quite a while.

The Magic Effect
Asking a spectator to copy your actions, the spectator will attempt to rotate their arm like yours in a 360 degree circle. To their amazement, they can only rotate it a tiny bit while you rotate a full 360 degrees right in front of them.

Preparation For The Illusion
All you need is just a long sleeve shirt pulled all the way down to your hand.

Secret Method Fot This Illusion
The secret to this illusion is to distract the spectator while you set up your hand correctly. Rotate your right hand clockwise until your fingers are pointing towards your body. This probably will be uncomfortable (at least it was for me!), but the more you practice and stretch, the easier it gets. Plus, the effect is well worth it! Twist a bit more while your fingers are touching the surface (the table if you are doing it there, or the ground). And now you hand should be pointing to the left. When in position, you should have now twisted your hand about 270 degrees CLOCKWISE until its facing the left.

The key to doing this is not letting your spectator know that you are twisting your arm like this. A good way to do this is to put your hand down like his pointed to the left, then distract him. You may distract him by saying something like "your doing it wrong, do exactly what I am doing" or "maybe you should move a bit to get a better view" then push him with your free hand and set your arm up while he is distracted.

Now start your rotation, and have him start his, twisting your arm COUNTERCLOCKWISE. His will stop after a short bit, but yours will keep going! All the way around. After you finish, there is added moves and effects you can do to twist even more in front of the spectator. I recommend you purchase Shinkoh's Twisting Arm Illusion that covers all of these methods.

Street Magic XL Trick

Effect: A magician walks toward a person on the street and asks if he could demonstrate a quick magic trick. He tries doing the magic trick but then ........his neck starts to hurt really bad. He grabs his neck and starts to sneeze...... . He then sneezes hard and his head jumps down to the middle of his body. While one hand is holding his head, the other holds on to his jacket. The magician then pulls his head back to the normal position above his shoulders. The magician then calmly walks away.

Preparation: Get a black shirt, lay it out on a surface and carefully cut it with scissors so that it has a V shape cut down to the middle of the chest area. Then you will need a jacket and another black shirt but don't cut the second shirt ! You will also need a long metal coat hanger. ( See photos at bottom of this page )

Get Ready : Put on the first ( the uncut one) shirt on..Then put the cut shirt on, on top of the uncut one. Next, on goes the jacket. Now get the coat hanger and lay it out flat so that it looks like a long rod. ( Make sure that the hanger reaches from shoulder to shoulder ). Grab the rod shaped coat hanger and and put it between the cut and uncut shirt, so that it looks like you have big tough shoulders.

Performance : Outside in an area with a potential audience around, approach someone and ask them if you can do a simple magic trick. While you are trying to do the trick, you suddenly get a neck ache you then reach back with your left hand and grab a hold of your jacket collar (and the rod shaped coat hanger ).Then pretend to sneeze ! harder and harder ! on about the fourth sneeze, you pull your jacket up by pulling on the coat hanger rod and push your head down through the V shape in the prepared cut shirt. You then pull your head back up with your right hand. Remember to keep hold of your lowered head with your right hand.

Carefully cut V shape from shirt.Squeeze the coat hanger to form a rod shape.

1) Cut V shape along white dotted area.......2) Squeeze coat hanger into rod shape.

Insert coat hanger under the prepared shirt and jacket.Carefully pull up coat hanger to give impression that head has lowered

3) Insert coat hanger under cut shirt.,,,,,,,,,,,.4) Pull coat hanger to give impression that head has lowered.

Practice this street magic trick in front of a mirror to get it right and also try performing the trick at a slight angle to the spectator and not directly face to face.

Coffee To Coins David Blaine Style Trick

David Blaine changed a cup full of coffee to a cup full of coins on his TV show

Set up: Get one of those coffee machine dispensed cups made of waxed paper and preferably with a pattern on the outside. Remove the bottom of the cup about an inch up from the bottom with a modelling knife or scissors and then place the cup back together by gently sliding the top half of the cup into the base using a slight twisting action if needed. Stack the cup three quarters full with coins.

Pack the coins in tightly and then pour in a little cold coffee, enough to cover the coins completely.

Coffee works best because it's so dark and will hide the coins. The cup should now look like a normal cup of coffee and is now ready to present to an audience.

Performance: Comment on how the patterns on the side of the cup are magic symbols.

Holding the top half of the cup with one hand, gently push up the bottom half of the cup with a slight screwing action with your other hand, then shake the cup.

As the coins “unsettle” the coffee will spill between the cracks and the coins appear.

This trick can be done with any cup of the waxed paper type that are usually found in vending machines. Be careful not to use hot coffee. Take care when using the modelling knife as it is sharp, even better, if your a kid, get an adult to cut it for you.

Cut cup into two pieces Join the cup together Fill the cup with coins

Fig 1: Cut cup in to two. ........... Fig 2: Screw back together........................ Fig 3: Pack tightly with coins.

Cover coins with cold coffee Gently screw and push up the base of the cup

Fig 4: Pour in coffee............. Fig 5: Gently push up base...................... Fig 6: Show cup with

Lightning Changing Card Switch

Street magic style trick where an ordinary playing card instantly changes into the spectators chosen card in front of his eyes.

Effect: A spectator chooses a card, looks at it and returns it to the deck. The magician then boasts about about how sensitive his fingertips are and about how he can find the spectators selected card by feeling the deck. He then riffles his fingers across the sides of the pack a few times and removes a card from near the middle of the deck. The magician then proudly announces that this is the spectators card and shows it. The spectator announces that it is not. The magician then asks the name of the spectators card and when told, the card he holds visibly switches to the spectators chosen card.

Method: Have a card selected and controlled to the top. (Methods of controlling cards and forcing a card can be found in this and other sites or magician sleight books at your local library) Now remove one card at random from the middle of the pack. While showing this card and asking if it's the correct one, get a finger break under the top card with your left pinky. This is easily done by holding the deck in the left hand in position for dealing and pushing the top card out with the thumb getting your little finger under it and then squaring the cards back up.

When the spectator has very happily informed you that you are wrong, lay the card face up on top of the pack. Square up the cards and remove the top two cards as one. You now have what amounts to a double faced card. When removing the card(s), take it palm down between the middle finger and the thumb with the forefinger resting about the middle (Fig 1). When you wish to make the card change, move the forefinger next to the thumb and make the card bend away from you (concave). You can now almost grip the one corner between thumb and forefinger. Release the corner with the middle finger and let the card snap around! (Fig 2) You will need to turn your hand a little, as well. Exactly how far you will need to turn your hand, will come with experience from practicing the trick. The two cards keep together really well after a little practice.

To polish off this jewel of a trick, drop the card(s) back on top of the deck and take the top (face up chosen ) card and place it on the table, then cut the deck. This will ensure that no one can check if the card had been a double faced one.
Press card in middle to allow card to flip and switch round to show the other side of the double faced card.

Fig 1 : Holding the double faced card(s), press the centre of the card(s) with your second finger, the side of the card held by your middle finger should be allowed to slip free and the card(s) snap round to be held between your thumb and middle finger.

Card switch showing the other side of the double faced acrd. The two cards should stay together, with practice, allowing for an effective switch.

Fig 2 : The double faced card(s) (are held between thumb and middle finger. They should stay together with practice and be seen by the spectator to be one card. Practice holding hand at slight angle to hide other side of card(s)

Place the cards back on the deck.

Fig 3 :Place the double faced card(s) on top of the deck.

Place top card on table and cut the deck to hide the other card used in the double sided pair.

Fig 4 : Take the top card and place it on the table. Cut the deck to hide the other card used in the double faced pair.

Spirit Writing Mind Reading Trick

An entertaining routine where the audience are impressed with your mind reading skills

Effect : The magician is seen to write something down on a paper note pad and does not allow the spectator to see what he has written. The magican announces that he is about to ask the spectator a question and because he can read his mind, already knows the answer that the spectator will reply back with. The spectator is then asked to think of a number between one and a hundred or a simple shape such as a triangle, square or rectangle and reveal this out loud. The note pad is then shown to find that the magician had written the same number or shape down on the note pad!

Method : Make a gimmick by taping a small piece of broken pencil lead to your thumb, ( Use clear adhesive tape such as Sellotape so that the spectator and audience will not see it and remember to keep the sticky side facing out ). Initially write nothing on the note pad, ( only appear to be writing something ) and when you hide the face of the note pad from the spectator, do so with your thumb facing the side of the paper that you had supposedly written something on ( See picture 3). When your victim says the number or shape that they have thought of, simply write it on the note pad with your thumb and then show it to them as your prediction.

This trick is really convincing but depends a great deal on the magicians performance. Try your hand at acting, look as if you are really concentrating and that the trick requires real mental effort on your part. This will reinforce the illusion that you really can read minds.

Placing tape on thumbPlace pencil lead onto tape Make sure that notepad is facing away from spectator

1) Place tape on thumb...............2) Place pencil lead on tape..... 3) Hold notepad away from spectator.

Broken And Restored Tea Spoon Illusion

A Super Close Up Tea Spoon Twister Trick That Leaves An Audience Dumbfounded

Effect:

First of all you casually lift a teaspoon after stirring your tea or even while your still holdiing it, - glance at it with an amused look and wiggle it up and down a little, as if it's kind of bendy and malleable..

You then calmly proceed to bend the bowl of the spoon backwards and forwards and look a little amused. You now appear to do an impossible feat of strength and twist the bowl of the spoon round and round, several times.

You can if your wish, break the bowl of the spoon right off, and then join it back together again and with a couple of twists - you just shake your head in disbelief at the poor quality of the spoon and it back down on the table - Fully Restored Back Together!!!. - This is close up magic at its best !!!

How To Do The Illusion :

Prepare a teaspoon head from another teaspoon to use in your trick.

You first need to prepare a simple gimmick. - This is just the bowl part of an old teaspoon that you have cut off with a hacksaw. - see picture on the left. ( Take care when using a hacksaw and file off any sharp edges, this should only be done by an adult )

Spoon bowl shown, held loosely in finger palm position.

The gimmicked spoon bowl has to be finger-palmed - This means simply holding it gently in your loosely curled fingers. - So have this kept in a convenient pocket where it's very easy to grasp it with your fingers.- See picture on the left.

Wiggling the teaspoon will give the impression that it is bendy and flexible.

The effectiveness of this close up magic illusion is all down to your presentation. - Holding the spoon in your right hand (or the opposite hand from the one that holds the spoon bowl in finger palm position), you give it a wiggle from side to side and if you hold it loosely between your thumb and forefinger it will appear as if the spoon is flexible and bending. While bending the spoon, try to look a little surprised as to why the spoon looks so bendy..

Correct positioning of the whole teaspoon in your hand.

Now take hold of the spoon with your left hand - the hand that is finger palming the gimmicked spoon bowl. - The spoon is held with the thumb and the first finger of the left hand with the bowl of the spoon slid behind the third, fourth and little fingers - See the picture on the left.:

Good presentation and patter is important as you pretend to twist off the head of the teaspoon.

You are now in a position to appear to bend, twist and break off the bowl of the spoon as you so desire, making some amusing remarks about the poor quality of the cutlery..

Presnt the restored spoon to your audience and sneak away the gimmicked spoon bowl.

Use the next move to lay the spoon back down, fully restored
Grab the handle of the spoon with your right hand and as you lightly curl you fingers of the left hand round the gimmick, - you turn the spoon over lengthwise in a forward twisting movement that leaves you completely free to either hold the spoon up for inspection or hand it to one of your onlookers to inspect. Alternatively, you can simply throw the spoon back on the table.

At this point your left hand naturally drops to your side with the gimmick hidden in the easy finger palm as when you started. You can then simply
put your hand in your pocket and get rid of the gimmick. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of this magic illusion . With a little practice, it can be performed smoothly and is an excellent impromptu close up
trick and can be carried around with you easily due to the minimal equipment required. I hope you have fun with this trick...

Coin Melt Through Paper Trick

By Luke Howard

Easy coin vanish sleight of hand that when mastered will allow you to perform lots of amazing magic and coin tricks

Coin Melt Coin Trick

Challenge a friend to pass a 20 cent coin through a piece of paper with a 5 cent hole in it … without tearing the paper! When their frustration reaches a satisfactory level, show them how it's done. This trick is shown using a UK 2 pence and 10 pence coin which will work equally as well.

Ripper Coin Trick

Square of paper shown with hole cut to size of small coin.

1. Cut a square piece of paper. Trace around a five cent coin and carefully cut out the circle.

It will be obvious to your victim that the 20 cent coin is much larger than the 5 cent hole but let them try before going on.

Paper is folded in half and the large coin placed inside.

2. Fold the paper in half and drop the 20 cent coin into the hole.

Paper is bent as shown to allow the larger coin to pass through the hole in the paper.

3. Bend the paper like this by pushing the ends of the folded paper towards each other and the coin will fall through the hole without tearing the paper.

What's going on?

This simple trick is a real stumper because most people assume the paper needs to stretch to make the hole bigger. You can't stretch paper so they either give up, or tear the paper and go red in the face. But a simple fold and a neat little bend makes the hole big enough for the 20 cent coin to slip through. The solution is pretty obvious once you've seen it so to get most enjoyment from this trick, use it to irritate your mates!

Coin Vanish Sleights Magic

Easy coin vanish sleights that when mastered will allow you to perform lots of amazing magic and very impressive coin tricks.

French Drop

Hold coin to be vanished, between your thumb and index finger.

1. Hold the coin that you want to vanish between your thumb and index finger.

Other hand is brought down as if it is going to pick up the coin.

2. Bring your other hand down from above as if you are going to pick up the coin.

Coin is dropped onto lower hand. Spectator will think that the upper hand contains the coin.

3. As you close your hand, drop the coin on your lower hand. Keep the top hand closed and remove the other hand. The spectators will think that you, the magician, actually took the coin.

Classic Palm Vanish

Coin is held in palm position.

1. Start the magic trick with a coin in the centre of your palm up hand. The coin should be in the palm position ( see photo, fleshy part at base of thumb should keep secure in hand, pushing it towards the centre of the palm).

Pretend to throw coin into other hand ( this move is known as "palming" in magician talk.

2. Pretend to throw the coin in the other hand, but retain it in the palm ( this is called palming) .

Close the hand that the spectator thinks that the coin is in. ( The coin is actually in your other hand which you dicretely get rid off while the spectator is not looking.

3. Close the hand that now seemingly " holds " the coin and get rid of the actual in the other hand somehow by magic( with

Hand Flip Easy Coin Trick

Easy coin vanish sleight of hand that when mastered will allow you to perform lots of amazing magic and coin tricks

Flip The Coin Trick

Coins are placed in hand as shown. Left hand coin in centre of palm. Right hand coin is nearer to the thumb.

1. Lay two coins in the palms of your hands like this - the positions are very important!

Notice that the coin in my left hand is right in the middle of my palm. The coin in my right hand is near my thumb.

Hands are flipped over quickly onto the table. The right hand coin should have flicked under the left palm to join the other coin.

2. In one quick motion, flip both hands over and slap them straight down onto the table.

The coin in your right hand should get flicked across and under your left hand. The coin in your left hand should simply fall straight down.

Right hand is shown not to be covering any coins.

3. Ask your audience where they think the coins are – they'll probably guess there's one under each hand.

If you move your right pinkie finger a bit, people usually guess the coins are under your right hand – then you can reveal they are wrong!

Coins are shown to be under the other hand.

4. Reveal both coins under your left hand.

If you repeat the trick, be quick! Try not to let anyone notice the positions of the coins.

Now, you can make the coins land under your right hand instead?

What's going on?

The position of the coins in your palms makes this trick work. As you rotate your hands from "palms up" to "palms down", the coin in the centre of your palm stays put and falls straight down. But the coin near your thumb travels around the centre of your palm and gets catapulted towards the other hand. With a bit of practice, it is almost impossible to see this coin shooting across before you slap your hand down to cover it.

The reason one of the coins gets flicked across is easy to understand if you imagine using a table tennis bat instead of your hand. Imagine laying one coin smack bang in the centre of one of a bat. As you rotate the bat, the coin rotates around its own centre too, but it does not get flicked away.

If you lay the second coin right on the outside edge of the other bat, something quite different happens. This coin travels around the centre of the bat in a big semi-circle and if you rotate the bat quickly enough, it will get flicked away.

How fast the coin gets flicked across depends on how far it is from the centre of your palm and the speed with which you flip your hands over. If you want to sound smug when people ask how this trick works, just say "it's just simple rotational mechanics . baby!"

Handkerchief And Vanishing Coin Trick

Effect : The magician sticks the coin into the handkerchief, turns it over and then the coin disappears from inside the handkerchief.

Secret :You secretly wrap a rubber band around your fingers and thumb.

Then you place the handkerchief in that hand. With your other hand place the coin into the handkerchief.

Then let the rubber band slide off of your fingers and onto the handkerchief, so it surrounds the coin and it is under the handkerchief.

You then slide your hand up to the end of the handkerchief and shake it.

This makes it look like the coin has disappeared.

But it is really stuck in the handkerchief, held by the rubber band.

Place elastic band round fingers Place coin into handkerchief.

1) Place elastic band round fingers. 2) Place coin into handkerchief.

Slip band around coin. Spectators view of handkerchief, coin held with elastic band on other side is not visible.

3) Slip band around coin 4) Spectators view of handkercheif.

Abracadabra Card Trick

This is a great self working card trick

Performance: Take 21 cards and deal them out into three columns by dealing seven cards in each column. Deal three cards across for the first row, then another card on top of each for the next row, and so on until you have seven rows of cards in three columns for a total of 21 cards. Make sure you deal out each of the rows so you can still see the cards behind it.( See picture below)
Now have someone think of any card in one of the columns, and then tell you which column the card is in. Pick up one of the other columns, then the column he chose, and then the last column, so that the column with the chosen card is between the other two.
Deal them out again the same as before, and have your volunteer tell you which column the card is now in. Again, pick up the cards so that the column he pointed to is between the other two.
Repeat the process of dealing out the cards, having him tell you which column his card is now in, and picking up the cards so that the column with his card is between the other two columns. You have now done this three times, and it's time to find his card!
Hold the cards face down in your hand, as if you were going to deal them out again, but instead ask your volunteer if he has ever heard of the magic word ABRACADABRA. Say that not many people know it, but ABRACADABRA is a magic word for finding things, and that you'll show him what you mean.
Spell the word ABRACADABRA, and for each letter deal one of the cards face down on the table. When you reach the last "A", pause, and then turn over that card. It will be the chosen card! As long as you spell ABRACADABRA right, this trick will work everytime!

Psychic Telekinetic Card Bending

A convincing illusion where a card is seen to bend through your telekinetic powers

You Will Need:

  • A pack of playing cards ( cheap cards sometimes work best)
  • Glass of water
  • To practice your acting skills

Method:

This is a great impromptu trick that can be performed at a moments notice and requires the minimum of props .

While in a group of friends enjoying some refreshments, casually rub some water on the back of your hand. Then get your friends attention and announce that you are going to cause a card to bend, solely by using your telekinetic powers. ( This is where a fair bit of acting and blah! blah! comes in handy to add entertainment value to the stunt.)

Take a playing card and place it on the back of your hand ( the one that has secret ely had water rubbed on it )

Gently press the card, flat onto your hand which should be held horizontally.

Next, remove the other hand and appear to be concentrating intensely and focusing your psychic powers on the card. The card will be seen to bend without any interaction or anything touching it. This looks amazing and you can claim it has been bent by your telekinetic energy.

This trick is enhanced greatly by your performance and patter. The card will bend automatically as it absorbs some of the water, hence cheap cards are normally more porous as they are normally less laminated. The bend in the card can be increased by picking up the card lengthwise and carefully squeezing it gently which makes the trick more convincing.

Mathomatics Card Trick

This is a good self working card trick I find very useful when a spectator makes it impossible for you to do a trick. I call the trick, Mathomatic.

Method: Ask a person to choose a card. tell him to remember it's numerical value (Ace = one, Jack- = 11, Queen = 12, King = 13) Also to remember the suit of the card.

Tell them to double the value of the card.

Then tell them to add three to the total.

Then tell them to multiply the complete total by five.

This done ask them to concentrate on the suit.

If the card is a diamond they must add one.

If the card is a club they must add two.

If the card is a heart they must add three.

If the card is a spade they must add four.

They must then tell you the final total.

From this total, you immediately know the chosen card.

The Secret: Is to mentally subtract 15 from the given total. You will have a number of two figures, possibly three

The last figure gives you the suit (diamonds 1, clubs 2, hearts 3, spades 4.) while the first figure gives you the suit.

Example: Jack of clubs

11 doubled is 22, add 3--25, multiply by 5--125. add for clubs--makes 127. You are told that number.

Subtract 15 mentally. Result 112. Last figure (2) means clubs, first figure(11) means Jack.

Magic Spell Card Tricks

Secret sequence of playing cards to enable every card in the deck to be located by spelling the name of the card. Amazing and convincing powerful free magic for use by card magicians.

This first sequence of cards will allow you to conjure up the card of your choice from any suit in the deck. In the example below, the spades have been set up in order for the magic spell trick to be performed with success. (You could use any of the other suits set up in the same sequence).

cards in order to spell

Set the cards in the above order so that the queen of spades is on the top of the pile when you hold them face down for dealing. You then spell A-C-E , placing one card underneath the pile for each letter of the card except for the last letter which is turned up to reveal the card you spelt.

Should you wish to successfully spell the whole deck of playing cards, then the pack should be set up in the following order.

You then spell A-C-E out loud, putting the A and C underneath the deck. You then turn the next ( E ) card face up to reveal the ace. You then continue on in this way until you have spelt the whole deck.

Card Forces

Easy card forces that when mastered will allow you to perform lots of amazing card tricks

To force a card is to ask the spectator to choose any card and make them pick the card you want him to pick. This way, you can create your own tricks. Just before performing, select a card to force. Then, force that card, and let the spectator shuffle the deck. Ask them to cut the deck in half and keep on doing things that will make your audience think that is imposible for you to tell which card was chosen. After a while you can reveal their card and accept the applause.

Elimination Force

Card force layout

1. To do this force, select the card to force and place it on top of the face down deck. Tell your audience that you will extract six cards at random. Extract the top card and five more cards. You must always remember which one is your peeked card. Please note that the card to be forced has been turned face up in the photos to make explanation easier. This card would be face down during the actual performance.

Now, display the six cards in two rows of three cards each. For this example, the selected card will be the third one of the top row.

description of elimination force

3. Ask the spectator to select a row. If the spectator selects the top row, say -"ok, we'll keep this one...". If the spectator selects the bottom one, say -"ok, we'll take this one out". The idea is to keep the row with our peeked card.

how to force a card

4. Now, ask the spectator to select any two cards. There are three possibilities. If the spectator selects the first row, say - "let me remove these two cards and you take the remaining one". If the spectator selects the last two, remove the first one, leaving the second and the third, and repeat the process. If he selects the first and the last, remove the second one and repeat the process.

Stop Force

howto force cards

1. This force, looks even better, because you actually ask the spectator to tell you to stop any place on the deck and HE selects the card at the stop point. Start by cutting the deck and placing the card to be forced at the top of the bottom portion of the deck.

2. Now, you'll be doing a very useful move named the little finger break . This move consists in leaving your little finger over the peeked card, so you can easily cut to it.

3. Now, riffle the deck and ask your spectator to tell you to stop in any place.

Magic Card Diviner

In this clever trick, the magician appears to be able to tell the colour of every card with a magic diviner.

Effect: A pack of cards is thoroughly shuffled. The pack can even be given to the spectator to shuffle, if they desire. Once the pack has been thoroughly shuffled, the cards are then spread face down on the table. The magician is then able to point to any card and tell which colour of suit it belongs to i.e red or black.

Method: Before beginning this trick, you first separate all the red suited cards from the black suited ones. Put the red and black suited cards into two separate blocks.
Take the red suited block of cards and while holding the pack, face up, bend the cards up so that they form a slight arch. Then put them down and pick up the black suited pack.

Holding the black suited pack face down, bend the cards up towards you forming a slight arch. The two separate blocks of cards can then be put back together. The pack is now ready to be shuffled. After shuffling, spread the pack face down on the table and you can secretly tell the red and black cards apart as they have slight bends in them. i.e the red cards curl down slightly and the black cards curl up slightly. This will not usually be noticed by your audience. You can then proceed to identify the colour of each face down card.

Performance: Although this is a simple trick, it can be very entertaining and impressive with a little bit of patter and imagination from the magician. You can pretend to have a " magic divining rod " for instance and even continue to blah!, blah!, blah!, e.t.c. about the origin of the magic divining rod / card.

All you then need to do is hold a wand or even another playing card over the face down pack and make it vibrate slightly as it passes over your desired card.
And there you have it, with a little bit of patter, you have transformed an otherwise run of the mill card trick into an entertaining feat of magic. See the magic tips and hints page for other performance tips.

Bend the half packs of red andd black cards back and forward. When the two half packs are put back together, a small arch can be seen.

1) Bend red and black piles up and down. 2) Small arch can be seen when packs are brought back together.

Torn And Restored Card Trick

Effect: A card ( which can even be a signed card ) is ripped into four pieces. The spectator puts a finger on the pieces and the pieces seem to magically restore themselves back into a whole card. !!!

Preparation: Before doing the trick, rip off one fourth of a playing card of the same colour of suit as the one that you will be appearing to tear.
Start the trick with the card facing in front of you and fold it into fourths, creasing the card and then unravelling it.
Explain to your audience that doing this makes it easier to tear the card evenly.

Performance:

Hold the card in front of you, facing the audience, the extra torn card piece should be pressed by your thumb onto the side of the card that is facing you. Rip down the upper middle of the card stopping at the centre. Now fold down the upper right corner and slide out the corner you ripped of earlier as the piece that was ripped of.

( This should look like you have ripped of the corner from the card - the audience cannot see that the real corner is still attached to the card and folded out of their view .)

Now put the torn piece behind the card again, being held in position with your thumb.

Fold what is now the lower right corner behind the card. As you are bending this piece back, slide the extra piece into view again, pretend to rip it off. Place it behind the card and fold the card in half again.

( really it is still together )

Pretend to rip it in half again, but just slide the loose piece off the pile convincingly to look like it has ripped. Place the piece behind the card which is now folded up.

Now even though the card is not ripped, you can fan the pieces to make it look like three or four pieces. Ask a spectator to place their fingers on the " torn " pieces. As you set the pieces on the table, steal the loose piece with your thumb and hide it in your hand by using a finger palm move.

Misdirect and place the loose piece in your pocket. Now ask the spectator to examine the card and they will find that it is in one piece.

Take a bow, as the audience look completely baffled.
